As seen on TV

POSTED on 01/31/2020 by Be Something Amazing

There are a multitude of TV shows that portray the life of an individual who works in the medical field. From medical dramas to reality television, there is a good chance that one of your favorite characters works in the medical field. Today’s post is about brining those TV careers into reality.

Call The Midwife

Call The Midwife is a drama series about midwives working in 1950s London. The show is based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth who worked as a midwife in the East End. This show follows the everyday lives of the midwives and what their job entails.

A midwife is a health professional who cares for mothers and newborns around childbirth. There is a difference between a certified midwife and a nurse midwife. Certified midwives are not required to hold a registered nursing license; however, the clinical education and certification exams are identical to the nurse midwives. Education to become a nurse midwife is similar to that of a nurse. It requires a bachelor’s degree followed by a master’s degree in midwifery.

M*A*S*H

M*A*S*H is an American war comedy-drama series that followed the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital doctors who cared for the injured during the Korean War. The main characters consist of a group of army doctors and nurses with various specialties.

Joining the armed forces can be a wonderful way to help pay for an expensive medical education, however it is a serious commitment and not for everyone. The tradeoff for finishing medical debt free is that graduates then owe the US Army, Navy, or Air Force several years of active duty service.

If you are interested in taking this route, you need to join the Health Professions Scholarship Program before starting medical school and the military will cover 100% of your tuition and most other education related expenses. In exchange, you typically owe four years of active duty service after you complete your medical residency.

The Resident

The Resident is a medical drama that focuses on the doctors and nurses at Chastain Medical Center. One of the main characters is Nic Nevin, a strong-willed nurse practitioner (NP) who seems to have a hand in every case that comes through the door.

Nurse practitioners generally provide a wide range of medical services, from primary, acute, and specialty care, to patient education and promoting a healthy lifestyle. NPs may also specialize in any field, including emergency medicine. NPs are independently licensed healthcare providers who are currently helping to fill the primary care gap in today’s health care field.

To become a NP, a Master of Science in Nursing is required, and it is also common for NPs to earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree.

Nurse Jackie

Nurse Jackie is a medical comedy-drama series that is known for its humor and controversial topics. Jackie Peyton is an emergency room nurse whose everyday life is an act of juggling patients, doctors, fellow nurses, and her own indiscretions.

With the current nursing shortage, registered nurses are needed now more than ever. Nurses act as a patient’s greatest advocate and are the key to great healthcare.

Becoming a registered nurse requires a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited college and obtaining a state license by passing the NCLEX-RN examination.
